Brad Hodder

Brad Hodder, Director of Julius Caesar

Having just completed a run at the Rabbittown Theatre in St. John’s this weekend, “Caesar” is making its way to Cupids. The play will begin a season of theatrical performances running from June 19 -July 4 in that community, led by the New World Theatre Project.  The play will take place will take place on the specially constructed portable interpretation of an Elizabethan Stage called the “Indeavour,” after the ship which John Guy and his colonists built to sail into Trinity Bay to meet the Beothuk.

For the summer of 2010, the Indeavour will be set up in the backyard of Cupids Haven B&B, Cupids.

Ashley Fitzpatrick of The Telegram in St. John’s interviewed the play’s director and provided the following information:

The play is not a running of William Shakespeare’s classic “Julius Caesar” directly from the page. Instead, it gets creative with the text – the story of the assassination of Roman emperor Julius Caesar and the aftermath of his murder. The unique version uses just three actors and … wait for it …

“I have no Caesar,” said director Brad Hodder.

“The first rehearsal we accidentally assassinated the actor,” he joked. But seriously, no actors were harmed in the making of this play.

“We adapted the script for three actors – that was sort of the genesis of the idea. Then as I got cutting and was looking at the script. … Caesar was in until three or four days until rehearsal started,” he said. Before opening the play at the Rabbittown Theatre, the emperor was nixed.

“The play itself is probably about Brutus anyway, and so this version of it is very much about Brutus. … We didn’t need the character of Caesar in our story. We’re focusing much more on Brutus and Cassius and what they’re going to do to Caesar, what happens to Caesar and then what they’re going to do once that happens. But the actual assassination itself – everybody knows he died,” Hodder said.

And so, “Caesar does make an appearance. He’s just not played by anybody,” he said.

The New World Theatre Project

The New World Theatre Project will be a collection of shows from the era of William Shakespeare (circa 1610), coupled with new commissioned work that will be interpretive, reflective, and entertaining for the whole family.

Jacobean Playhouse

This work will be staged on a spectacular set.  They are building an interpretation of a Jacobean playhouse.  The playhouse will incorporate design elements that would have been seen in structures of the day, but with materials that would have been readily available to the group of 39 settlers that landed with John Guy in 1610.

In order to guarantee the success of the project next year, and into the future, we have secured a tremendous international partnership with Shakespeare’s Globe Centre Canada in Toronto and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

This is a massive undertaking so Rabbittown Theatre Company has brought on two of the province’s finest producers to assist in the project; Brad Hodder and Geoff Adams.  Rabbittown Theatre Company will also be implementing a full time General Manager position for the operation of the company.
