Dale Jarvis with Feather Point Dancers – Originally uploaded by John Guy2010
Dale Jarvis, Intangible Cultural Heritage Development Officer for the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, visited Old Perlican on July 17th to participate in the Traditional Dance Symposium hosted by the Old Perlican Heritage Committee. Traditional dance in Newfoundland and Labrador has long been recognized as a means of socialization within a given community. The dances reflect the particular aesthetics of an individual community while celebrating its commonality with the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador as a whole.
As part of his visit Dale conducted interviews with several of the dancers. The interview was introduced by Dr. Kristin Harris-Walsh, Centre for Music, Media and Place, Memorial University. The interviewees were Wendy Wager, Feather Point Dancers, Harbour Grace; Elizabeth Tuttle, Baccalieu Square Dancers, Old Perlican; Alice Cumby, Mizzen Heritage Square Dancers, Heart’s Content; and, Sheila Power, Baccalieu Trotters of North River.
