Happy Faces Greeting 2010.

New Year’s Celebrations were awaited with more than usual excitement in the town of Cupids this year, because 2010 is the 400th anniversary of the town, the first permanent English settlement in Canada.

Cupids 400 Inc planned a large “party”  with early evening events for families with children, and later evening events for adults, culminating with a spectacular fireworks display.  They advertised the event widely in the local press and through Twitter and Facebook, explaining that roads would be barricaded, and that there would be an organized shuttle service to bring people to the site of the celebrations in the middle of town.

New Year’s Eve was exceptionally cold, but the sky was bright and clear, and the celebrations kept everyone warm. Organizers were pleased with the strong community and regional turnout.  People came from communities throughout the Northerm Avalon, drawn by the promise of a good time, live music, family celebrations and spectacular fireworks. With a well planned and efficient shuttle service in place, the event suffered none of the potential traffic snarls and congestion.

A special family celebration began the evening with entertainment that included kid friendly activities and performances, free treats and a special fireworks display.

The adult portion of the evening’s festivities was highlighted by live entertainment, hot food, heated tents to take shelter from the crisp night, capped by a dazzling 18-minute fireworks display at the stroke of midnight.

The whole event was an auspicious beginning to an exiting year for the town of Cupids.

About Me

Henry Crout, one of John Guy\'s Colonists is the avatar for Cupids Cove Chatter. The hand represents his journal writing. Although a number of people including John Guy and Sir Percival Willoughby recorded information about the first English colony in Canada, Henry Crout recorded what was happening on the ground. We hope this blog will introduce and describe events from an - on the ground - perspective. We hope to have guest bloggers who will add their descriptions and opinions.
