Posted by Crout On August - 12 - 2010

“An Habitant Drinking”, originally uploaded by John Guy2010.

On August 11, 2110, Library and Archives Canada officially launched the “Portraits in the Street: Cupids 400″ installation. Developed by the Portrait Gallery of Canada, a program of Library and Archives Canada, and in collaboration with Cupids 400 Inc., this outdoor portrait installation celebrates the 400th anniversary of Canada’s first English settlement.

Taken from the national portrait collection at Library and Archives Canada, the installation features 18 quality reproductions of works brought together under the theme of new beginnings and first contacts. The portraits tell the story of known individuals such as Thomas D’Arcy McGee, Demasduit, George Cartwright, and Grey Owl, as ell as everyday citizens whose lives and actions have shaped this country from the Atlantic to the Pacific over the past four centuries.

Portraits in the Street: Cupids 400 is on display on Seaforest Dive in Cupids until October 1, 2010.

Scott Andrews, John Guy, and “Portraits in the Streets”
Originally uploaded by John Guy2010

MP for the District of Avalon,  Scott Andrews who has family roots in Cupids, sponsored a pancake breakfast for Cupids 400.  Special guests  were Federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff with his wife,  Zsuzsanna Zsohar; MP Gerry Byrne; MHA Roland Butler and his wife Maud; and other Liberal senators and MPs from across Canada. Members of the community enjoyed the opportunity to display the beauty of Cupids and tell about its significant place in world history.

“Portraits in the Streets”  by the National Portrait Gallery of Canada, along with Cupids harbour on a perfect summer day, made  an impressive backdrop for visitors to the breakfast.

About Me

Henry Crout, one of John Guy\'s Colonists is the avatar for Cupids Cove Chatter. The hand represents his journal writing. Although a number of people including John Guy and Sir Percival Willoughby recorded information about the first English colony in Canada, Henry Crout recorded what was happening on the ground. We hope this blog will introduce and describe events from an - on the ground - perspective. We hope to have guest bloggers who will add their descriptions and opinions.
