Photography and Traditional Music

Originally uploaded by John Guy2010

On Sunday, May 2nd Dennis Minty and Gerry Strong gave their presentation on Cupids and the Baccalieu Trail. A large audience enjoyed seeing the region through the eyes of Dennis, award winning wildlife biologist, environmental educator, and photographer, who has photographed all over the world. The traditional flute and tin whistle music by Gerry Strong, who is founding member of “Tickle Harbour,” added the perfect atmosphere.

Dennis has a photo bank of 1000 images of the Baccalieu Trail. The images were shot during 2009. 20 of his images will be on display in Ottawa for Canada Day.

Dennis pointed out the difference between looking and seeing. Looking is passive, while seeing is active. He said his work is driven by a reverence for nature, driven by light. He likes to get up high to get the big picture, then come down and get the details.

In Cupids, he would like to see a world class trail system an Burnt Head and Spectacle Head.

Gerry and Dennis are working on a DVD. All his images are available as prints at his studio on Riverside Drive in Clarke’s Beach.

Someone in the audience asked about the “American Man” at the top of Spectacle Head. Dennis pointed out that these piles of rock are found in many locations around Newfoundland. He said that it is thought that people turned the phrase “Marking Man” into “American Man.” He believes that they may mark fishing grounds.
